When searching for plumbers in San Francisco what should you look for?

Every city relies heavily on its plumbers, San Francisco no exception.  If you’re a homeowner, you’ve doubtless called one to your home at some point.  And if you manage an office building or even a restaurant that sees a lot of traffic, you’ve surely had many experiences with plumbers and probably have built up a good relationship with at least one of them.

To narrow down your plumber search even further, you might want to contact the plumbers on your short list for a kind of mini-interview.  Compare estimates for a few different jobs: who offers the lowest price?  What kinds of response times can they guarantee?  If your toilet is overflowing or you can’t take a shower for some reason, you obviously don’t want to wait around for hours waiting for the plumber to knock on your door.  Try chatting with a couple of the plumbers you’re looking at, too.  Are they friendly, respectful of your concerns?

Of course, you won’t really know how you like your plumber until you give him or her a try at fixing something in your home.  Really evaluate this person’s performance on the first visit.  Is this plumber courteous?  How long did it take for the person to show up from the time you called in about your problem?  How long did it take him or her to complete the job?  If you’d received an estimate from the company about how much this job would cost, did the actual price match the estimate?  If you’re happy about the performance (and the plumber didn’t do anything unprofessional like curse with your children around or wipe his feet on your carpet), you should celebrate: you’ve found a winner!  You’ve found someone you can trust with your plumbing needs, and you won’t have to worry about whom to call the next time a plumbing fixture is on the fritz.  And, of course, you could always repay your new plumbing friend by spreading the word about his or her quality work all around San Francisco; the competition among plumbers in major cities is understandably intense, and no doubt he or she would appreciate the positive word of mouth.
